Pigmentation Treatment
Skin color is a function of the
size, number and the distribution of melanin cells. Visible pigmentation in
human results from the synthesis and distribution of melanin in the skin, hair
bulbs and eyes. Melanin plays a crucial role in the absorption of free radicals
generated within the cytoplasm and in shielding the host from various types of
ionizing radiation, including the UV light. Thus, melanin protect the skin
against sun burn. The essential enzyme in melanin biosynthetic pathway is
tyrosinase, the only enzyme absolutely required for melanin production.
Skin pigmentation depends upon
different factors :
-
Duration and frequency of
exposure to UV and sun.
-
Skin age that renders skin more
susceptible to skin pigmentation.
-
Hormonal factors that activate
tyrozinase.
-
Genetic factors that control
susceptibility.
Types of hyperpigmentation:
-
Liver spots, also called
lentigines or lentigos, are sharply defined, rounded, brown or black, flat
patches of skin.
-
Pregnancy mask: Large area of
hyperpigmentation that appears on the face during pregnancy and stays on.
-
Melasma: Scattered large
pigmented spots appear on the face and are related to sun exposure.
-
Freckles: Hereditary condition
which gets worse by exposure to sun.
-
Pigmentation secondary to
medications: Certain medications such as birthcontrol pill, antibiotics, Retin-A,
Accutane, and anti-depressants are known to cause hyperpigmentation.
